Days 2 and 3 Pungo River to Coinjock NC
Day 2 in the Pungo River gave us mid 40's, sun and calm water. So far the Simrad auto pilot is working great. I stand at the upper helm from time to time so Lee can take a break and walk around enjoying the view from different angles. Not much green on the landscape yet. I'd sure never be doing this in my home State of Minnesota in early March! I was anxious for some Spring color and Harris Teeter had these bulbs that fit perfectly into our cup holders. Instant Spring without the bunnies or deer to chow them down.
We enjoyed 8 hours of the winding Pungo River. No dolphins or jumping fish or birds in sight. We saw only one other boat. But, then who would be crazy enough to want to be in a boat when it's in the 40s?! OK, never mind.
We had been told that because of construction on the Alligator River Swing Bridge, that their first opening of the afternoon would not be until the workers left for the day at 6 p.m. Lucky for us two barges needed to get through at 4 p.m. and if we could make it by then, they'd let us go too. Shangri-La put the peddle to the medal and we got through 2 hours earlier than planned. In the next channel we dropped the anchor for the night in 10 feet of water with great holding.

Day 3 On to Coinjock. What happened? Barely a ripple on the water yesterday and now today we had 2-3 footers for nearly 3 hours while navigating across Albemarle Sound toward Coinjock. Strapped into our life jackets pitching and rolling, riding the waves like we were on the best roller coaster ever! Add pouring rain and temps in the low 40s and you've got a real ride going on!
Here we were two years ago in Coinjock. New boat. New life. Going South then. North now. |
Same dock then as now |
All you can eat ribs n shrimp dinner in their cozy restaurant was our reward for surviving our day of sporty seas! |
