Cape May, NJ To Sandy Hook, NJ

We pulled out of Cape May on April 21 after filling the fuel and water tanks.  After battling narrow shallow ditches and 5 ft. waves to arrive here, it was wonderful to break out into the ocean on this beautiful calm ride up to Atlantic City, NJ.  The entire New Jersey shoreline is sandy beach, hence the popular name “Jersey Shore” with vacationers.  With the temp in the low 50s, we aren’t seeing any sun bathers today.

The anchorage we chose was in a small inlet called Brigantine.  We came in at low tide and barely squeaked through the small channel to find a good holding spot for the anchor.  When anchoring, we try to find mud or sandy bottom with depths of 7-10 feet.  Tonight we set the anchor at 3:45 p.m. in 9 feet and Captain is happy.

We have a  beautiful twilight view of Atlantic City and all it’s casinos and street lamps lining the shore.

Thankfully, the next morning brought us another sunny calm day. We pulled up anchor and were underway by 6:15 a.m. out into the ocean toward our next anchorage at Sandy Hook, NJ. (Not the same Sandy Hook where the mass school shooting took place).
I don’t normally work with knives while we are underway, for obvious reasons, but today the seas are smooth as glass. I’m itchin’ to be in my galley.  Decided to make guacamole!  Chopped tomatoes, onions, garlic and cilantro.  No missing fingers.  Great snack!

We had to divert from our route and go over a 40’ reef (shallow for the ocean) in order to dodge a group of fishing boats.  Fishing is best on the edge of a reef.

Approaching Sandy Hook, our excitement is building as we can now make out a hazy New York City skyline.

NEW YORK SKYLINE

Anchor down for the night we sit down to supper.  What the??  Coming within only a few short feet of us is a dredging barge also looking for a place to drop anchor.  Lee tries to hail him but gets no response.  We hold our breath assuming he sees us and will move far away!  He circles around for a long while until finally finds his perfect spot...far from us.
Ok, dodged that bullet.  Back to our meal.  You just never know how a day will go!

This our last day on the Atlantic Ocean.

I don't sleep well that night knowing that by dawn we will be in New York Harbor viewing Lady Liberty and all the beautiful sights of New York from Shangri-La.
